1907 YMCA Time Capsule
On June 6, 1907, members of the Fort Collins community laid the cornerstone for the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) building at the northwest corner of Remington and Oak Streets in Fort Collins, Colorado. The June 12, 1907 issue of the Fort Collins Courier newspaper described the ceremony and the contents of a small copper box that had been placed in the cornerstone. The building was completed in February 1908 and was home to the YMCA for over two decades. In the late 1930s, the Fort Collins Elks Lodge #804 bought the building and resided there for over sixty years. The façade underwent a major change in 1977 after an explosion, presumably from a faulty gas line, damaged the building. In 2008, the Elks lodge sold the building to the Fort Collins Downtown Development Authority, and deconstruction of the old YMCA building began that year. During the dismantling of the building, workers uncovered the small copper box encased within the cornerstone where it sat patiently for over a century. The copper “time capsule” was opened during a small ceremony at the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery on January 11, 2013 at 1:30 pm. The items were in very good to excellent condition, and some items from the box were immediately placed on display in the Archive at the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery. The items were scanned by Archive volunteer Sarah Bogard in March of 2015 and have been uploaded for online viewing.
